Prothrombin gene mutation is an inherited condition that increases your risk of developing abnormal blood clots in your veins and lungs (deep vein thrombosis or DVT) (pulmonary embolism or PE). This occurs because your body produces more Factor II (prothrombin) protein than is required for normal clot formation. Blood clots can cause serious problems in your body by obstructing blood flow and preventing oxygen from reaching your cells.

Why it is done?

This test contributes to the risk assessment for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in order to better inform treatment and clinical management decisions for patients with a relevant personal history of VTE, as well as potential preventative care for patients with a significant family history of VTE.
